Gwynn converted to Roman Catholicism at age 10, when his mother was received into the Catholic Church.〔Hugh Kearney, ''Ireland: Contested Ideas of Nationalism and History'' (2007), p. 15.〕 He attended the Jesuit-run Clongowes Wood College from 1903 to 1908. His brother Denis Rolleston Gwynn (1893–1971) was professor of modern Irish history at University College, Cork. He wrote on Irish and church history, but also on topics including the West Indies.
